Naira Marley Cancels Planned EndSARS Protest

Nigerian music star, Naira Marley, on Tuesday announced that he had shelved his planned protest against activities of special anti-robbery squad (SARS) slated for today.

CityNews Nigeria reports that Over the weekend, the social media, especially twitter, was replete with calls for the proscription and dissolution of SARS due to its atrocious and diabolical actions against the citizenry, a development that many believed is a stark deviation from the primary objective behind its creation.

Many public public figures and celebrities lent their voices to the disbandment of SARS and used their clout and influence to advance the cause.

This prompted the ‘soapy’ crooner to announce a planned protest.

But in a tweet on his official page on Tuesday morning, the Nigerian hip hop sensation, announced suspension of the protest, noting that new development has come to light.

He disclosed that the suspension of the protest is informed by the government promise to address the issue holistically and effect changes that are in tandem with the agitation of the people.

“We won’t be protesting anymore because there’s a lot of changes being made right now.

“As a Marlian we will give them a week to see the changes and if there’s no changes we will start a mass protest. #togetherwecan,” he tweeted.

EkoHotBlog had earlier reported that the minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare, on Monday, had urged Naira Marley to desist from embarking on his peaceful protest.

Dare had stated that the grievances faced by Nigerians are being addressed, hence no need to embark on peaceful protest.

Advising the singer against the protest, the minister said the federal government was determined to tackle the issue.

In a tweet, the minister wrote: “I urge you and other youth not to embark upon any protest. Your grievances are being addressed at the highest level of government.

“As the Minister in charge of youth I know this is an issue that must be tackled. Government is doing just that.”
